    Finding Specialist Contractor Accountants

    By PSI Accountancy | Blog, Contractor Advice, Freelancer Advice | 0 comment | 23 February, 2017 | 0

Why look for Specialist Contractor Accountants?

Choosing the best accountant for yourself can be a confusing enough task as it is. Finding specialist contractor accountants can be even harder. Especially when you are just starting out and may not know what you are doing. Nowadays, so many accountants blindly claim that they offer the best service compare to everyone and guarantee to make you money all the time, but when push comes to shove they always come up with excuses and never meet expectations. Most of them will blame others for failing deliver on their promises, avoid your calls or simply just overcharge you for their services. At some point in their career everyone has had a bad experience with their accountant, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

When looking for a new accountant there are some common mistakes that people make that can greatly affect how well their accountants handle their business. For example one common mistake is making the assumption that all accountants provide the same service and are the same, however this is fair from the truth. For example certain accountants will specialise in different things. Some will work exclusively with medium to large sized companies while others may operate as specialist contractor accountants. Location is also an important factor in choosing an accountant. Some people may prefer to do all of their accounting online using specialist software that they can just input their information. Others may prefer to work face to face with their accountant and have all of their meetings in person. If this sounds like something you’d prefer then it would make little sense to work with an accountant located on the other side of the country. Another aspect to consider is how involved you personally will want to be in the filing of your accounts. For example if you prefer to simply send in the relevant information and have someone organise and complete your return for you then a firm that excels in that will be better for you. You may however prefer to be more involved in your accounts and therefore may prefer to work with a dedicated accountant who deals with you directly. If you prefer to be more involved in your accounts then it may be better to work with a firm who work through an office that you can visit and meet your accountant face to face. Alternatively you may want to ensure that they are regularly available either by telephone or email if you have any questions.

    Are Specialist Contractor Accountants important?

Even when you take these things into consideration, finding the best accountant as a contractor is still a very difficult thing to do. Specialist contractor accountants excel in very different things compared to accountants that work with sole traders and companies. For example, do they have any experience in dealing with IR35? Do they work directly with contractors themselves or do they deal with the Umbrella companies? Do they simply claim to specifically be specialist contractor accountants or are they actually recognised and accredited as accountants for contractors. Failing to consider these factors has the potential to prove disastrous in the future. For example if you are a contractor and you forget to complete and submit your IR35 in time, you will be liable to serious penalties from HMRC, and even prosecution! The importance of these things cannot be stressed enough. That is why finding the right specialist contractor accountants can be so critical to the success of your business.
